Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited and Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider are possibly the most infamous celebrations of the American ideal of freedom as an open road.

Planning a road trip? Well you’ve come to the right place. Data from travel search engine, Kayak, reveals that American cities top the list of UK travellers’ favourite international destinations to hire a car and hit the open road. The prospect of driving on the right hand side of the road and navigating six lanes of traffic doesn’t faze us as Orlando, San Francisco and Los Angeles are all amongst the five most popular international destinations for Brits to hire a car.

Going by the moniker ‘The City Beautiful” Orlando is ideal for exploring theme parks, water parks, golf courses and more. Head south to South Beach. You’ll pass posh Palm Beach along the way, a great place to stop off for breakfast or lunch en route to Miami.

2. Los Angeles

The world’s coolest road trip has to be Highway 1. Start in LA and head to San Francisco – America’s favourite city. This classic all-American drive is at its most dramatic when it passes through the 90 miles of coastal road that is within the Big Sur.

Head to the capital of the Costa del Sol and explore sunny Andalusia. Head east and visit quaint Nerja a white-wash village on the coast before reaching Almeria an attractive port that still has a north African feel. The beaches of Cabo de Gata are stunning, sweeping and almost deserted.
