Luxury hotel brand Trunk has worked with design studio Tripster to create this stunning boutique hotel in Tokyo, which takes cues from traditional Japanese designs – but unusually boasts its own tiny (soundproofed) nightclub.
Located in a historical building – a former geisha house – within Tokyo’s buzzing Kagurazaka neighbourhood. Once guests step into the contemporary hotel, they are transported into a Tokyo residential style of living.
Inspired by salons that permeated the city in the 17th and 18th centuries, where artists and academics would congregate to share ideas and debate late into the night on issues that would shape the cultural landscape of the city.
The one-bedroom luxury hotel can hoast up to four overnight guests or up to 30 for cocktail-parties to reside alongside an array of bespoke design pieces artworks by seven locally and internationally-based artists.
Guests can relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city within the private indoor garden in this sanctuary. Whether it be the quietness of the early morning, tea time in the afternoon or a late-night gathering with friends, the property’s ground floor living room and garden provides a serene respite.
The bath is outfitted with an aromatic Japanese cypress bathtub surrounded by shunga printed onto white tiles by the contemporary ukiyo-e painter and woodblock print artist Masumi Ishikawa. It is a homage to Japanese public baths that used to be found in every town of Japan.
