The Dolder Grand: luxury-class city resort, Zurich

Since it first opened its doors in 1899, The Dolder Grand has been known for its high-octane glamour and luxurious accommodation. It became iconic, hosting legendary figures such as Henry Kissinger, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Liz Taylor and Nelson Mandela.

Located in a unique position between the pulsating life of Zurich and the stunning forest, The Dolder Grand enjoys unrivalled views of the city, the lake and the Alps.

The 173-room luxury Swiss hotel underwent a £309 million, 4-year renovation project, the historic main building was revamped by London architects Foster+Partners while a new spa and golf wing were added. In order to deliver a sustainable and eco-friendly performance, the entire hotel now uses geothermal probe techniques for efficient energy consumption.

The rooms and suites reflect the Dolder symbiosis of tradition and modernity. Interior architects United Designers, also from London, have shaped new living spaces. In the main building, their refined, eclectic configurations instil a sense of history, while the two wings epitomise the spirit of the modern age.

In April, 2013, a new app was launched to allow guests to tour the hotel‘s collection of original art using an iPad. The specially designed app features 124 artworks by artists including Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Salvador Dali, which are displayed throughout the hotel.

This app enables iPad users to sort the remarkable list by work or by location, find out more about the 90 artists and access a map showing the positions of the works.

If technology and art are not your thing, the luxury Swiss hotels also boasts an award-winning spa; an ice rink in winter; two restaurants, including The Restaurant with two Michelin Stars, as well as a bar that will keep the snobbiest of wine connoisseurs happy.
