Luxury Caribbean resort to unveil $40m fashion makeover

The luxury resort in the Caribbean has partnered with David Schwarz Architects and Luis Pons D-LAB to redesign five new suites and enhance its arrival experience for guests.

The Saint Barthélemy resort, located on an exclusive 18.5-acre peninsula on the northeast tip of the island, between Marigot Bay and Grand Cul-de-Sac Bay, tapped into David Schwarz Architects and Venezuelan designer Luis Pons to heighten the resort’s private and residential feel with French and Creole influences.

Saint-Barthélemy, is a true paradise in the middle of the Atlantic, the pearl of the Caribbean Sea. One of the oldest Caribbean Islands, it was named by Christopher Colombus after his brother Bartholomeo in 1493 and colonised by the British in the XVIIth-century. Now under French administration, the luxury island is surround by pure, white sand beaches and crystal-clear water reflecting the deep azure sky.

Luis Pons’ contributions to Hotel Guanahani & Spa’s re-design are inspired by one singular object: the Panama hat. Though originally from Ecuador, the Panama hat embodies Hotel Guanahani & Spa’s art de vivre and ambiance.

“We wanted to have the interiors of the suites reflect the property’s lush surroundings, blending the two seamlessly, using functionality, elegance, and lightness,” said Pons. “The Panama hat is the perfect example of function and style, and it’s the embodiment of hospitality, as tipping your hat is a welcoming gesture.”

The luxury Caribbean hotel, which features 67 colourful luxurious cottages, 36 of which are suites, recently revealed two grand suites, or villas, designed by Luis Pons. The ‘admiral suite’ runs more than 1,100-square feet with décor inspired by the legacy of exploration that brought Christopher Columbus to St. Barth in 1493. Set at the tip of the peninsula with sweeping views of Grand Cul-de-Sac Bay, the suite comes complete with a wrap-around deck overlooking the lagoon, two bedrooms and over-sized en-suite bathrooms – one with a Jacuzzi tub flanked by a picture-window perspective on the Atlantic Ocean. Al fresco showers and private pool featuring panoramic views of the bay are what you can expect at this chic resort.

This summer, Hotel Guanahani & Spa will roll out three more suites, as well as refresh to the reception area. The new lobby will be the heart of the resort, relaxed setting featuring a lighter colour palette that showcases the open-air architecture.
