Contemporary Noho Loft, New York

New York-based design studio StudioMDA have completed the Noho Loft project. The contemporary loft can be found on Broadway, New York City.

According to the architects: “The design of the loft is in a way antithetical to Manhattan’s Noho neighbourhood, where the common practice is the open plan. The approach for this luxury New York property was to curate gallery-like vistas in the living areas and separate the sleeping spaces to allow each its own identity and privacy.

“The children’s wall provides a home within the home, combining storage for toys, an Astroturf covered play area, a lofted bunk and nestled, intimate ‘cocoons’ for leisure and reading. Situated to the scale of a child’s hiding place, the wall encourages adventures in the labyrinthine corridors of imaginations. The cocoons endeavor to achieve the implied metamorphosis, by providing sanctuary for imaginative thought, where one may lose oneself in daydreams, or in some great book.

“In a way, the design for this contemporary New York loft is antithetical to most of the neighbouring lofts in Noho. The common practice is the open plan to make spaces flow from to another. The approach for this residence was to separate spaces as much as possible to allow each its own identity, and allow each its privacy.

“The thick warping bedroom walls create the subconscious gate to one’s genesis, suggesting the quiet isolation implicit. In the children’s play area this concept is taken so far as to create cocoons for reading and relaxing. The cocoon, an effigy of metamorphosis, is the subconscious gate to reinvention, bolstering the child’s imagination.”
