Contemporary apartment – Carat, Kharkov, Ukraine

Kharkov-based architectural practice, Drozdov & Partners, have designed the Carat project. Completed in 2011, the contemporary multi-family apartment can be found in Kharkov, Ukraine.

According to the architects: The contemporary family home is located on a slope off a central historical hill in the city. One of the assignments for the project was to integrate the building into the existing scale and parceling of the surrounding development making maximum use of the challenging terrain. The terraced building gradually follows the hill, which facilitates the loading and guarantees maximum exposure of the living units to the southern part of the city.

“Compositionally, the building consists of two parallel four-storey blocks with another six-storey bar resting on top of them. The open space below flows from the entrance group to the mirador-platform and continues into the endless view over the cityscape.

The six-storey bar is marked by facing panels that imitate wood. Its northern façade has scanty glazing, as mainly bedrooms and studies overlook this direction.

“The interior design for each apartment has is own spacious terrace opening towards the south, sun-lit terraces adjoin living rooms and kitchens, thus providing a nice place for having breakfast, sunbathing and enjoying the splendid far-reaching view of the city.”
