Preview: Tent London & Super Brands, London Design Festival
Now in its 7th year, Tent London returns to the Old Truman Brewery with its showcase of home grown and overseas talent.
The East London hub of the London Design Festival has garnered a reputation for showcasing new ideas across multiple design disciplines, this year the show organisers have concentrated on rooting out undiscovered European talents such as Vera & Kyte, Atelier Violeta Galan, Grand, Orée and Tokio. Showing alongside are UK-based established independents including Studio Jon Male, Chisel & Mouse, Thomas & Vines, Suzanne Goodwin, Room39, Erica Wakerly, Bold & Noble and more.
Breaking up the stands are Project Spaces, which give architects and designers the possibility to experiment with ideas and processes, three-dimensional environments, colour, material, light and human interaction.
Tent London’s Country Showcases have always been an essential bedrock of the show, a chance to see previously unseen work from more than a 100 designers and companies, hand picked from around the world. This year sees the largest collection to date, with 100% Norway back celebrating its 10th anniversary, plus KHiB with Friends, a welcome second design showcase from Norway. Fresh Taiwan returns this year and is joined by the Hungarian Investment & Trade Agency, the Crafts Council of Ireland and Four Seasons in Shanghi.
Sister show Super Brands London is co-located with Tent, giving international brands temporary showrooms to broaden their exposure in the UK market. Participating companies include Edra, BoConcept, Ligne Roset, Objekten, Munna, Mineheart, Surface View and Jacuzzi. Furthermore, talks, demonstrations, workshops and idea sessions make up the Super Talks programme, this year under the theme Mobilised.
The Super Design Gallery will provide a showcase for museum quality pieces, reflecting demand in the market for authenticity and originality, a welcome slap in the face for the current period of austerity. Work by, among others, Freshwest, Jake Phipps, Laura Kishimoto, David Derksen and Lex Pott, will blur the line between art and design with sculptural pieces that deftly play with ideas of form and function.
Tent London and Super Brands London takes place between the 19-22 September at the Old Truman Brewery, Hanbury Street (off Brick Lane), London E1 6QR. UK.
