Minimalist WR House, Belgium

Belgium-based architectural practice Schellen Architecten have designed the House WR project.  The contemporary property was designed by the principal of the firm for his private residence.  Completed in 2011, this two-storey, contemporary property can be found in Keerbergen, Belgium.

According to the firm: “The architect designed this minimalistic low-energy home for his family. This luxury spacious home was designed on 8 acres of land, and is designed around contrasts – open to the sun and the garden, but closed to the street and the north.

“The black volume on the ground-floor contains the living areas, all connected but visually separated. The upper floor of the contemporary home has been designed with semi-floating white volumes and accommodates the bedrooms.

“Through pivoting glass doors and skylights, daylight illuminates the whole property. At night, moonlight provides subtle lighting in the upper corridor.

“Because of its eco-friendly design, thie home uses little energy. Air-tight and well insulated, this home loses almost no energy. The small amount of energy necessary for heating the home during winter, is produced by a geothermal heat pump and solar panels. Most of the interior lights are LED. All produced heat is reused (even heat from waste-water).

“This luxury property has shown that low energy design and minimalistic architecture can go hand in hand.”
