Contemporary R House with an unusual layout, Singapore

International architectural practice ONG&ONG have completed the R House project. Completed in 2011, the contemporary property can be found in Singapore.

Nestled in the Joo Chiat conservation area of eastern Singapore, the luxury house fits beautifully into the historically rich setting, with its classic black-and-white façade. The interiors tell another story, as modern furnishings and a rather unusual layout provide a refreshing contrast to the structure’s traditional exterior.

Contrary to typical configurations of shophouse homes, the living, dining and kitchen areas are housed on the second floor, whilst the master bedroom shares the ground floor with a simple, yet elegantly furnished reception hall. The attic holds the children’s bedrooms and the roof deck contains an outdoor barbecue area for entertaining. The general concept for the communal second floor was to have a single, continuous space that was unconstrained by walls. To accommodate such a design, the central staircase was repositioned to the periphery, which also helps to improve the home’s internal circulation. This spatial reversal also allows the master bedroom to occupy a much larger floor area on the first level than would otherwise be possible had it been situated higher up within the building. There is even enough space to accommodate an outdoor courtyard at the back of the plot.

Another striking characteristic of this luxury Singapore house is how bright and well ventilated the interior is despite the house’s length. High windows, an open balcony and a jackroof in the attic allow for optimal sunlight penetration as well as unobstructed airflow throughout. With its eclectic mix f old and new elements, this contemporary Singaporean house is a wonderfully unique piece, defying convention to create a thoroughly functional and visually satisfying home.
