Located on the foot of Mount Hengill, on the edge of Thingvellir National Park, Iceland, the ION Hotel is poles apart from other luxury hotels in the country.

About an hour from the capital city of Reykjavik, the design-led hotel sits at the foot of a massive volcano and is surrounded by hot springs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the largest lake in Iceland.

Boasting 46 rooms, a chic lava spa with an outdoor geo-thermally heated 10 metre hot tub, fine-dining at its Silfra Restaurant, serving modern Nordic cuisine and Northern Lights Bar, a perfect spot from which to enjoy the night’s sky, the ION Hotel is a great hotel to explore Iceland’s spectacular scenery. Activities on offer include hiking, swimming in hot springs, diving and snorkelling in the Silfra fissure, fishing, horse-riding, kayaking, off-roading, glacier tours and white-water rafting.

Inside and out, you are surrounded by a visual symphony inspired by Icelandic cultural heritage. The chic hotel is designed by Minarc, with contemporary and eco-conscious designs to maximise panoramic views. Driftwood-like beams and other natural materials, including tires, have been used to create the hotel’s striking furniture. The design is inspired by explorer Ingólfur Arnarson, who reportedly founded Reykjavík in 874AD.

Need some TLC? Treatments at the spa incorporate a hot mask by Icelandic brand Sóley Organics, containing the ash, which is known for its therapeutic qualities. These include boosting collagen and aiding oxidation of the body. With skin thoroughly revitalised, you can take a dip in the thermal outdoor pool, with inspiring lunar views towards Iceland’s largest lake, Thingvellir
