The Contemporary House S, Tokyo, Japan

This modern home designed by Keiji Ashizawa can be found in a quiet residential area in the center of Tokyo. The location of the house is in a  cul-de-sac, away from the main thoroughfares. The house was once a samurai residence.

The house has many gardens on each floor of the home, to bring the surrounding landscape into the house. Overall, the house is part of the larger landscape, and this contemporaneity property benefits from its green surroundings, which help with privacy.

Architects Keiji Ashizawa said: “The clients wanted to insure that they could enjoy the large landscape, as well as the art and furnishings that they have collected. We extensively discussed both their lifestyle and a setting for their furnishings – and how to mold materials, light, air and space to fit this broader goal. All the materials including the lighting and space are in constructed within the house to work with the art and furniture”. Images courtesy of Daici Ano.
