Modern Brick Kiln House, India

Designed by award-winning SPASM Design Architects,  Brick Kiln house can be found in Alibaug, Maharashtra, India.

Located in a small village Munavali, close to Alibaug, a favourite getaway, for affluent Mumbai residents to build their dream country homes.

The three acre plot was formerly full with Tamarind groves and Mango trees, with the odd, Champa, Vad tree. If you drive around the Raigad district, you can often see local brick stacks being baked on the green lots that surround them – some remain abut most have been abandoned.

The brick choice was based on colour, strength and finish — blemishes of hand-made units were key to the overall expression.

Red earth brick do not tend to be precise, neither do they create patterns or jaalis as commonly seen in Indian architecture, the brick is what it is, at rest — a stack, its mass concealing and revealing life within it. The sheer thickness – mass of the brick, keeps the interior spaces comfortably cool. Images courtesy of Sebastian Zachariah.
