Bhutan’s National Flower is the extremely rare blue poppy, but red, white and pink poppies also bloom on the high mountain passes of this protected Buddhist Kingdom in summertime. Luxury resort Amankora is offering the chance to explore the Bhutanese landscape on foot, Amankora is offering six or seven night poppy treks on the high mountain passes, where visitors can witness the colourful floral displays of Bhutan’s national flower – the very rare blue poppy – as well as red, white and pink poppies.

June and July are the best time of year to witness the display of poppies when, despite the possibility of monsoon showers at night, the days are usually mellow with beautiful light. The poppy treks are arranged on request until the end of July.

The treks include two or three nights of trekking through the Haa Valley with overnights in tented camps, as well as two nights in Amankora Thimphu and two nights in Amankora Paro.

There will be around three to five hours walking per day with elevations ranging from 3,000 to 4,500 metres. Camps offer rustic yet comfortable stand-up tents fully furnished with beds, tables, chairs and carpets and three meals a day served as picnics or in the spacious dining tent.

However, if you prefer cycling Amankora is hosting a special ten-night Himalayan cycling expedition between its five lodges from 30 August to 9 September. The expedition will include one of the most challenging cycling races in the world – The Tour of the Dragon on 6 September. During the one-day event, participants will cover 268 kilometres from central Bhutan to western Bhutan with elevations of 1,200 to 3,340 metres across four mountain passes.

The expedition includes ten nights accommodation staying in Amankora’s five lodges set throughout the central and western valleys, all meals and house beverages, laundry, airport transfers, a private car, driver and guide for the entire journey.  The price also includes free entry for the Tour of the Dragon race, two foot and leg massages, race day support and cycling jersey, followed by a race day wrap party at Amankora’s Thimphu lodge.
