Contemporary Residence in Seattle by Balance Associates Architects
With its unusual exterior design, this 3,000 square foot contemporary residence is located in Seattle, Washington, close to Leschi Park. Designed by Balance Associates Architects, the three-story home sits on a 6,167 square foot sloping lot in a quiet dead-end street.
Surrounded by stunning wildlife, this house – set in an ‘urban wilderness’ – is a strikingly contemporary yet beautiful and comfortable home. The house is broken into three parts; a base, a middle, and a cap. The base is formed so as to stabilise the home on the aforementioned steep hillside, accomplished by splaying and covering the wall with vines. The middle consists of two boxes separated by a small circular space, while the cap is a loft-like large expanse of glass covered with a contemporary wooden roof, offering sublime views of Lake Washington, including downton Bellevue and beyond to the Cascade Mountain range, and the remaining surrounding area.
The interior is a delightful splash of colour within spacious, calming climates. Purple, red, orange and blue can be found in the main living area, which is joined onto the vast kitchen area, offering plenty of room for the clients. Two charming and well-fitted bathrooms, two comfortable and spacious bedrooms and a massive study room all accompany this excellent piece of architecture, while there is also a room fitted with a small hot tub-like appliance.
Although the house has a large amount of glass, it still is very energy efficient. Several techniques contribute to this: it uses a high performance glazing that reduces heat loss; the building has high levels of insulation; it is tightly sealed against infiltration and it has a passive ventilation system that is controlled by infrared and humidity sensors, creating an efficient yet modern and beautiful home.
