Contemporary GK House, North Carolina

Raleigh-based design studio Kenneth Hobgood Architects have designed the Chapel Hill House project.  The luxury family home can be found in North Carolina, USA.

According to the architects: “The contemporary American house is located in the Historic District of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  The site is located approximately half a mile from the main street of Chapel Hill and the campus of the University of North Carolina.

“The site is surrounded by woods and slopes from east to west. Access to the site is via an easement through an adjoining property.

“Originally the site was part of the Coker Estate.  Dr Coker was a botanist and responsible for bringing to Chapel Hill much of its distinctive plant material.  Much of the property was used for his experiments.

“The owner’s original house was burned to the ground. The intensity of the fire destroyed trees, gardens and much of the surrounding vegetation. The resulting site condition, while barren at its center, is surrounded by dense and mature vegetation.  The new house and gardens were designed in collaboration with landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburg. The relationship of the contemporary American property and its gardens was of primary importance.”
